Answer: It was a bright and warm day. The Prussian soldiers were drilling in the woods. The birds were chirping. M Hamel was going to ask questions on participle and Franz had not learnt anything about it. He was afraid of M Hamel’s scolding. So he was tempted to stay away from school.

उत्तर: यह दिन चमकदार और गर्म था। पर्शिया के सैनिक जंगल में ड्रिलिंग कर रहे थे। चिड़ियाँ चहचहा रही थीं। एम. हैमेल पार्टिसिपल पर प्रश्न पूछने वाले थे। और फ्रेंज ने कुछ भी याद नही किया था । वह एम. हेमल की डांट से डर रहा था । इसलिए उसने स्कूल से दूर रहने का मन बनाया।

Answer: M.Hamel was a teacher of the french language. He had been teaching for the last forty years in the same school. He had to leave the school from the next day for good as teaching of French had been banned there. Therefore, the old men who were sitting at the back benches came to pay  their respect towards M. Hamel for his faithful duty.

उत्तर एम. हैमेल फ्रेंच भाषा के शिक्षक थे। वे पिछले चालीस साल से इसी स्कूल में पढ़ा रहे थे। उन्हें अगले दिन से स्कूल छोड़ना था क्योंकि विद्यालय में अब फ्रेंच पढ़ाने पर प्रतिबंध लगा दिया गया था। इसलिए, पीछे की बेंच पर बैठे बूढ़े लोग एम. हेमल के प्रति उनके निष्ठावान कर्तव्य के प्रति सम्मान व्यक्त करने के लिए आये थे।

Q.4 How were the parents and M. Hamel responsible for the children’s neglect of the French language ?

बच्चों द्वारा फ्रांसीसी भाषा की उपेक्षा के लिए माता-पिता तथा एम. हैमेल किस प्रकार उत्तरदायी थे ?

Ans:  No only the children themselves but also their parents and M. Hamel were to some extent responsible for the children’s neglect of the French language. The parents would send their children to work on a farm or at a mill so that they could get some extra money. M. Hamel would often ask them to water his plants instead of teaching them. And when he wanted to go fishing, he would give them a holiday.

उत्तर: न केवल स्वयं बच्चे बल्कि उनके माता-पिता और एम. हेमल भी बच्चों द्वारा फ्रेंच भाषा की उपेक्षा के लिए कुछ हद तक जिम्मेदार थे। माता-पिता अपने बच्चों को खेत या मिल में काम करने के लिए भेजते थे ताकि उन्हें कुछ अतिरिक्त पैसे मिल सकें। एम. हैमेल अक्सर उन्हें सिखाने के बजाय अपने पौधों को पानी देने के लिए कहते थे। और जब वह मछली पकड़ना चाहते थे, तो वह बच्चो को छुट्टी दे देते थे ।

Ans. It was his last lesson at the school. He heard every lesson to the very last. He explained the rules of grammar and set little children to write in their note- books. He used every minute of the last day in teaching.
