The whole story moves around Sophie and Jansie, who are classmates and friends. Sophie is a daydreamer. She fantasises about opening a boutique, becoming an actress, or a fashion designer, while Jansie is more practical, aware of their poor backgrounds. Sophie’s extravagant (अत्यधिक) dreams make Jansie advise her to be sensible. Jansie knows that they are destined for the biscuit factory after school.
Sophie strongly believes in her brother Geoff, who works as an apprentice mechanic. She shares an unbelievable story about meeting Danny Casey, a football wonder-boy, which her father and Jansie doubt. Sophie’s father is a football fan who idolizes Casey, and Sophie worries about Jansie spreading the story. After witnessing Casey play at a football match, Sophie’s illusions continue, imagining encounters with him, only to face the reality that her dreams are products of her imagination.

This story is about a lower-middle-class family girl who fantasizes about an imaginary world around her and is completely engrossed in it. Fantasy to a level is a good thing but too much involvement brings problems. Sophie, mere a schoolgirl, dreams of Danny Casey, the Irish genius, and a good soccer player and feels that she has met him in reality. Her family members and her friends warn her and mock her ‘wild stories’ but Sophie is not ready to accept the reality.
She dreams so much of Danny Casey that she herself forgets that she has never met him. Too much escapism into her dream world and then coming back to the harsh world of reality is too painful for her. The world of fantasies has no logic, it is too glorious and the real world pales in comparison. In Sophie’s case, her glorious world had no relation to her impoverished existence, so it was bound to end.
This lesson is about a teenager’s flight of fancy and her return which was bound to be disappointing.
