Mijbil The Otter Summary
The story reveals love and affection for one’s pet. In the beginning of 1956, the author and his friend were then in Iraq. While travelling to Basra one day, the author mentioned to his friend that he craved to have an otter instead of a dog as a pet. A few days later, his friend sent him an otter from the marshes of the river Tigris by Arabs. The otter looked similar to a little dragon. It had a soft velvet fur.
The author named the otter Mijbil. It was of an exceptional species found anywhere. The zoologists named it Maxwell’s otter. In the initial few days, Mijbil was not very friendly. The author made a body-belt for it. He would take it to the bathroom, where it enjoyed and spent time playing with water in the bathtub. Hence, the days quickly passed by joyfully at Basra. Now, the author had to return to London. It was a problem to transport Mijbil to England. The British airline did not allow animals on its flights. So, Maxwell booked a flight to Paris and from there he would go on to London. The airline insisted that Mijbil should be packed in a box that was to be placed on the floor, near his feet. With great difficulty, the author had to put otter in a little box and then took it to the airport. While in the plane, the otter managed to escape from the box and created chaos. After an exciting journey, the author and the otter reached London.
The otter and the author spent mesmerizing time with each other. They would play for hours with toys and would also go out for a walk. Mijbil had invented a game on his own which he played with a ping-pong ball. He would put the ball at one end of a sloping lid and then grab it as it ran to the other end.
In London, people did not recognise it. They were surprised to see one such kind of rare species. Some would guess it as a baby seal, a squirrel or a walrus. Indeed, it astonished all.

ऊदबिलाव और लेखक ने एक-दूसरे के साथ मंत्रमुग्ध कर देने वाला समय बिताया। वे घंटों खिलौनों से खेलते और बाहर घूमने भी जाते। मिजबिल ने अपने दम पर एक गेम का आविष्कार किया था जिसे वह पिंग-पोंग बॉल से खेलते था । वह गेंद को ढलान वाले ढक्कन के एक छोर पर रखता था और फिर दूसरे छोर की ओर दौड़ते हुए उसे पकड़ लेता था।
लंदन में लोग इसे पहचान नहीं पाए. ऐसी ही एक दुर्लभ प्रजाति को देखकर वे हैरान रह गए। कुछ लोग इसे बेबी सील, गिलहरी या वालरस के रूप में अनुमान लगाएंगे। सचमुच, इसने सभी को आश्चर्यचकित कर दिया।

The story is about the responsibility that one should bear while he/she owns a pet. It is not about liking the pet due to its loveliness that one feels after seeing a young animal. It is a great matter of concern. It needs attention and proper care. So the decision of having a pet, should be taken by all the members of a family otherwise the poor pet becomes a pitiful and uninteresting object.
