Q.1. What led the Maharaja to start out on a tiger hunt? 

Ans. The chief astrologer had predicted that Maharaja’s death would cone from a tiger. He was born in the hour of the Bull and the Bull and the Tiger are enemies. Hence, the death would come from the tiger. The Maharaja vowed that he would attend to all other matters only after killing the required hundred tigers. So the Maharaja started out on a tiger hunt.

Q. 2 What warning did the astrologer give the Tiger King when he killed the first tiger? Did the predictions of the astrologer come to be true? 

Ans. When the Maharaja killed the first tiger, the astrologer warned him again. He told him to be very cautious with the hundredth tiger. Yes, his prediction came true. The Maharaja was not able to kill the hundredth tiger. 

Q.3  When was the Tiger King in danger of losing his throne?

When did the Tiger King stand in danger of losing his kingdom?

Ans. The Maharaja had banned the killing of tigers in Pratibandapuram. So he refused to give permission to a British officer for hunting tigers there. Because of this refusal, the king was in danger of losing his throne and kingdom.

Q.4 How did the Tiger King manage to retain his kingdom?

How did the Maharaja please a high-ranking British officer?

Ans. The Maharaja did not allow a high-ranking British officer to hunt tigers in his kingdom. In this way he displeased the officer and was in danger of losing his kingdom. To settle the matter, he sent the officer’s wife a selection of fifty diamond rings. The king expected that she would keep the one she liked. The lady kept all of them. Thus he retained his kingdom with the loss of three lakhs rupees. 

Q.5 Why was the Maharaja so anxious to kill the hundredth tiger?

Ans. The astrologer had foretold that the Maharaja should be wary of the hundredth tiger. Killing the last tiger would mean that he had proved the prophecy wrong and thus saved his life. That is why he was so anxious to kill the hundredth tiger.

Q.6 The manner of his (the Tiger King’s) death is a matter of extraordinary interest. Comment.

How did the Tiger King meet his end? What is ironic about his fate?

Ans. The manner of the Tiger King’s death is a matter of extraordinary interest because he killed ninety-nine live tigers just to avoid his death or save himself. But the irony is that the death comes from a harmless wooden toy tiger. A tiny sliver of wood on it pierced the Maharaja’s right hand. It became infected and the Maharaja died due to the infection. Thus, his death was destined and he failed to survive the ominous prediction.

Q.1 Describe the efforts made by the Tiger King to achieve his target of killing a hundred tigers.

Ans. The Tiger King spent a significant time and made numerous efforts to fulfill his target of killing a hundred tigers. He vowed to kill the hundred tigers. He banned tiger hunting in his state except for himself. He postponed all other matters of the state before achieving his target. He killed  seventy tigers in ten years. The Tiger King even married a girl from another kingdom which had a large tiger population, when the tiger population became extinct in his own kingdom. He did not permit a high-ranking British officer who visited Pratibandapuram to shoot tigers, as he feared that other British officers would turn up for similar expeditions. Later, he realised the danger to his throne and had to spend a sum of three lakh rupees to impress the British officer’s wife and discourage him from killing tigers. All these efforts were made to fulfill his target of killing a hundred tigers.

The story The Tiger King’ is a satire on the pride and conceit of those in power. The Maharaja of Pratibandapuram tried to believe what was written in his fate. The result was ironical as well as tragic. The chief astrologer had foretold that the prince was born in the hour of the Bull. The Bull and the Tiger are born enemies. Therefore, the tiger would be the only cause of his death.

Q.2 The story is a satire on the conceit of those in power. How does the author employ the literary device of dramatic irony in the story? 

Ans. The story The Tiger King’ is a satire on the pride and conceit of those in power. The Maharaja of Pratibandapuram tried to belie his fate. The result was ironical as well as tragic. The chief astrologer had foretold that the prince was born in the hour of the Bull. The Bull and the Tiger are born enemies. Therefore, the tiger would be the only cause of his death.

The proud Maharaja banned tiger hunting in the state by anyone except himself. If anybody dared even to throw a stone at a tiger, his wealth and property would be confiscated. The Maharaja appeared well set to realise his ambition. Somehow he was able to kill ninety-nine tigers. He needed just one (tiger) to complete the tally.

The author employs the literary device of dramatic irony in the story. The irony is that the Maharaja thinks himself safe after killing the hundredth tiger. He does not know the real truth. The hundredth tiger didn’t die of his bullet but survived. Ironically, the tiger that caused the death of the Tiger King was not a tiger of flesh and blood. It was a wooden toy-tiger.
