 Ans. On January 4, the voyagers felt some relief. Mary found some corned Beef and biscuits and, They had their first meal in almost two days. But their relief was short-lived. At 4 p.m. black clouds began building up behind them, within the hour the wind was back to 40 knots and the seas were getting higher. The weather continued to deteriorate throughout the night, and by dawn on January 5, their situation was again desperate. They realised that they were going to die.

1. A smooth start to the worst:- This first-hand account of the voyage begins with the introduction of the voyagers, the description of the boat and the preparations made. The first part of the journey passed smoothly. The trouble started when they left Cape Town. A great wave hit their ship and it got badly damaged. The first section of the narration ends with the voyagers trying hard to evade the dire situation.

2. From Respite to Desperation:- The second section begins with some respite from the storm and its consequences. The water level was under control and they could take some rest. They hoped to reach the islands provided the wind and the waves abated. They had their first meal in two days. By January 5, their situation was again desperate Jon declared that he was not afraid of dying. The author made all efforts to save the ship. However, the storm subsided by the morning of January 6. The author made fresh calculations in his chart-room

3. All is well that ends well:- In the third section of the narration, a utter hopelessness imbibes in them a sense of great determination. Consequently, they manage to reach the much longed- for island. In the end, the narrator becomes sentimental, as he thinks about the calm and composure of his family members and the two sailors they took with them.

 Q. 1. What difference did you notice between the reaction of the adults and the children when faced with danger?
जब खतरे का सामना हुआ तो वयस्कों और बच्चों की प्रतिक्रियाओं में आप क्या अन्तर देखते हो ? 

Ans. The reactions of both the children and the adults were quite congenial to the need of the hour. Panic did not overpower them. All of them were calm and composed. Adults tried their best to tackle the situation they were in. Firstly, they took all precautionary measures with a view to minimising the damage likely to be caused by the oncoming danger. When they failed to evade the disaster, they immediately took to the task of repairing the ship. The narrator tried to locate the two islands which, could have the best shelter for them. 

On the other hand. Jon, a six-year boy tried to cheer his father by saying that they were not afraid to die if they all could be together. Also, his sister Sue prepared a card with the caricatures of her parents on it and presented it to her father with a note which read. “Here are some funny people. Did they make you laugh? I laughed a lot as well.” How important it is to note that the children tried to assuage the pangs of agony at hand rather than causing worries to their parent. Interestingly enough it was a perfect team to face the dangerous cope with the perfectly perilous situation.
