They used a boat named Wavewalker for this purpose. They had longed to do this and for nearly 16 years made preparations for this voyage. Their boat, the Wavewalker, was a 23-metre, 30-ton boat. It was built very efficiently. It had been tested many times in rough weather. They had spent their spare time improving their skills in sailing a boat.
The first phase of their voyage was smooth and enjoyable. Before they entered the roughest sea, the Southern Indian Ocean, they took two experienced sailors, Larry Vigil and Herb Seigler with them. They encountered strong gales on the second day out of Cape Town. The bad weather continued, and it seemed at times that the sea was rolling towards them. On January 2, at around 6 pm, the wind dropped, and the sky grew dark, indicating disaster ahead.
A torrent of water broke over the ship, causing it severe damage. The narrator himself suffered severe injury as his head smashed into the wheel and he was thrown into the sea.
